What do the white dots in the computer game of Hearts mean?

When you open the computer game hearts (the one that comes with Microsoft computers), it shows you the 4 hands of cards - yours face up and your opponents face down.

All of the opponents have 3 white dots on their hands of cards. What does this mean?

I thought it showed how many of each suit they had but, on counting it doesn't work.
