You don't need any document to open a computer game on a Mac. If the game has a help file, it might be helpful to open that and read it. You don't need to do it though, it might just be helpful.
Are you sure the game you're downloading is for the Mac? You have to be using the Mac version and not a Windows version. That would make a huge difference. No clue why iPhoto would get triggered though without knowing more of the exact details of what you're downloading (file types, what web sites, etc.).
If its a Windows only game then you can't access it from OS X. You would need to install and run Windows on your Mac. Either through virtualization such as VMWare or Parallels or install Windows natively using Boot Camp. This would require a bunch of hard drive space though, either method. And you need a legit copy of Windows for the install.
