Is it possible to physically damage a computer game's discs by playing it too much?

I read in the newspaper about a particular computer game player who played a computer game so much, that he ended up physically damaging the computer game's discs. In other words, the computer game's discs were completely spoilt and had to be replaced. Personally speaking, I'm also a computer game fanatic, but I've never ever experienced this kind of situation before in all my years of playing computer games. Is it possible to physically damage a computer game's discs by playing it too much?
There were problems with early X360s damaging game discs (and I think some PS3 too), but that was more down to bad disc tray design, not specifically excessive playing. As long as the disc isn't warped to begin with and the drive isn't damaged, then the only wear on the disc should from the heat of the drive and being removed/replace in the disc cradle.

DVDs/CDs may not be as durable as Blu-Ray, but it'd take a decade of CONSTANT use for those tiny bits of friction to reach the readable data tracks. The heat in a poorly ventilated drive/PC might cause warping or other damage, but that's a result of a bad drive/PC, not excessive playing itself.

Basically, it's highly unlikely unless there's something wrong with your drive/PC.
